Giving Holocaust Survivors a Helping Hand

The Jewish Agency of Israel has a mission:
Ensure every Jewish person feels an unbreakable bond to each other and to Israel, so we can continue to play our critical role in our ongoing Jewish history.

For more than two decades, The Jewish Agency has lived out this goal by helping provide housing and social work assistance to Israeli senior citizens...

Amigour, a subsidiary of The Jewish Agency, operates 57 sheltered housing projects throughout Israel, serving more than 7,500 vulnerable senior citizens. It gives the most cherished members of our community an opportunity to live independently and enjoy a tight-knit community and an increased quality of life—particularly for the more than TKTK Holocaust survivors who call Amigour home.

B. is one such resident. Born in Bulgaria, B. was only 8 years old when her father was sent to a concentration camp. In order to survive, she and her mother had to steal food both during and after the war. This feeling of hunger and helplessness stays with her to this day.

In the Amigour community where she lives, many residents share stories just like hers. There’s L., who was forced to live in a ghetto at age 16 when the Germans occupied her city. And P., who as a child, lived in the ruins of a building in silence with her family—hoping the Germans wouldn’t discover them.

Through Amigour-led initiatives such as “Remembrance & Testimonials Project”—where more than 1,000 stories were gathered from survivors and recorded—Amigour cares for our past and preserves our history.

It’s a long-held mission of The Jewish Agency that strong community ties is what will keep the Jewish people thriving for generations to come. And a big part of this is caring for our elderly and disenfranchised members. Amigour is more than just an series of apartment complexes. It’s a holistic environment where residents can flourish. Social and recreational activities—including crafts, home economics, exercise classes, Hebrew language classes, gardening and volunteer activities—help enhance the quality of life for senior citizens, connecting them not only with each other but with the general Jewish population of Israel.
