Amigour, a subsidiary of The Jewish Agency, operates 57 sheltered housing projects throughout Israel, serving more than 7,500 vulnerable senior citizens. It gives the most cherished members of our community an opportunity to live independently and enjoy a tight-knit community and an increased quality of life—particularly for the more than TKTK Holocaust survivors who call Amigour home.
B. is one such resident. Born in Bulgaria, B. was only 8 years old when her father was sent to a concentration camp. In order to survive, she and her mother had to steal food both during and after the war. This feeling of hunger and helplessness stays with her to this day.
In the Amigour community where she lives, many residents share stories just like hers. There’s L., who was forced to live in a ghetto at age 16 when the Germans occupied her city. And P., who as a child, lived in the ruins of a building in silence with her family—hoping the Germans wouldn’t discover them.
