Jane Sherman has spent the last 50 years involved in Jewish communal work. She is particularly passionate about children at risk in Israel, Jewish education, and working to train, educate and engage the next generation of Jewish leaders.
Jane was the founding chair of the Young Women’s Leadership Cabinet and also a founder of the Israeli Forum. For many years, she was a vice chair of UJA and UJC, and served as chair of the United Israel Appeal. She is currently on the Global Planning Table. Jane has held numerous top leadership roles in the Detroit Federation, including Women’s Campaign chair and president, first woman chair of the General Campaign, and vice president of the Federation. She is also Chair of the Max M. and Marjorie Fisher Foundation and a board member and campaign chair of the Birthright Israel Foundation.
For over 25 years, Jane was a member of the Board of Governors of The Jewish Agency and she is now an honorary board member. She is a member of The Jewish Agency Executive and has chaired the Israel Department, Youth Aliyah and Allocations, and was the first chair of Project Renewal. Partnership 2000 and Youth Futures were started under her chairmanship at the Israel Department of The Jewish Agency. Jane and Larry have led over 50 missions to Israel. Jane also co-chaired and professionally ran Detroit’s first two miracle missions which involved a total of over 2,200 people.
Jane and her husband, Larry, are intimately involved in Fisher Flight, a program to develop future Jewish leaders. They also started a program in Detroit to educate and train the future campaign leadership of the Federation. Jane has won numerous awards including Detroit’s highest honor, the Fred M. Butzel Award. She is a recipient of the Herb Garon Young Leadership Award, Israel Bonds Leadership Award, and the Sylvia Simon Greenberg Young Leadership Award as well as having been made an honorary citizen of Ramle, Israel. She also serves on the boards of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Aspen Music Festival and School.
Jane and Larry have three children, 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Over 20 years ago, Jane and Larry unofficially adopted five Ethiopian children who had lost their parents. Today there are seven in the family. One daughter is married and has a baby.
